Stonewards Demo: Why It Was Removed and What Replaced It
There is no demo any more
The Stonewards demo was removed from Steam on July 11, 2026, a month before Early Access launched. Search interest has not caught up — “stonewards demo” is still one of the two biggest rising Stonewards searches on Google over the last three months — so this page exists to give the question a direct answer instead of a download link that does not work.
If a site is still offering a Stonewards demo download, it is either mirroring a dead Steam page or offering something that did not come from the studio.
Why it was removed, in the studio’s words
Banana Tiger Studio announced the removal on July 7, 2026, four days before it happened, and gave a reason rather than a shrug:
“The game has evolved and the demo no longer matches the current quality and true representation of the game. As a small indie team, we prefer to focus 100% of our energy on making the Early Access version as polished as possible rather than facing the difficulties of maintaining both the demo and the Early Access version at the same time.”
The same post called the demo “a huge milestone for us” and credited the feedback and bug reports it generated with improving the project.
What the demo was
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| May 25, 2026 | Devblog #06 announces a playtest weekend and confirms the demo for June 2 |
| June 2, 2026 | The Steam demo goes live |
| June 4 – June 24, 2026 | Five demo updates ship: 0.1.5, 0.1.6, 0.1.8, 0.1.9 and 0.1.10 |
| July 7, 2026 | Removal announced |
| July 11, 2026 | Demo taken offline |
It was actively developed while it existed. The June 12 update improved campfire healing, and the June 4 update was an audio and bug-fix pass. It was also the source of some content still searched for today — “stonewards demo how to revive” is a live query, and the answer is the same as it is now: carry the body to the campfire, per the revive guide.
What replaced it
The paid Early Access build, out since August 11, 2026 at $9.99 USD. There is no free tier, no trial and no time-limited version.
Points worth weighing if you were waiting on the demo to decide:
- The Early Access build has a 95.2% positive Steam review score across 755 reviews as of September 1, 2026 — see the numbers in full.
- It has received six hotfixes in its first fifteen days, up to 0.1.8 on August 26.
- Steam’s own refund policy is the practical replacement for a demo: under two hours played and under fourteen days owned.
What the demo did to the game
Two of the demo’s fingerprints are still visible in the Early Access build. The campfire resurrection mechanic was introduced during the playtest phase (Devblog #05, May 1). And the character abilities system — each dwarf getting a distinct role — was added in the run-up to the demo, per Devblog #06.
The demo also did its commercial job: Stonewards went from 10,000 wishlists in April to over 100,000 by July 31, announced alongside the $9.99 price.
